There But For the Grace of God Go I

There But For the Grace of God Go I… it’s a common refrain usually reserved to remind oneself that they ended up in a better place than someone else because of opportunities, or favor, or preference, or any other benefit from God. But what happens when that less fortunate soul is you in the past?

I call this song My “Amazing Grace” simply because it looks back on the times in my life when I most closely relate to the lyric, “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me”.

When I look at the homeless, the beggars, the sin-sick (aren’t we all) I am reminded of times when I was exactly where they are and my thought instantly goes to, “There but for the grace of God in the last few years, WAS I”

Here are the Lyrics:

Eyes sunk hollow from a sleepless night

Pressing on against the cold

Drags himself to work, no one can know

Way too young to feel this old

Wife and Kids need food for one more day

Broken family holding on

Scratch a paycheck out in any way

Beat Yourself till hope is gone.

Take it all away

For just one day

Just a chance to breathe

Just a chance to be

There but for the grace of God go I

Eyes are weary Night has turned to day

Driving drunk from dusk til dawn

Neon calls to him come hide away

You deserve it you’ve been strong

Watch the weaker men go filing in

Hates the longing in his heart

Just a quick glance for his lonely soul

Spoiled priceless work of art.

Take it all away

For just one day

Just a chance to breathe

Just a chance to be

There but for the grace of God go I

Here I stand now I’m a different man

Picked me up after the fall

Come before you Lord with empty hands

Finally stopped to hear your call

Took it all away

Changed my night to day

I’m a man set free

Give me eyes to see

That there but for the Grace of God go I
